As we approach the year 2024 there has been a wave of protests by Israeli citizens against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu driven by concerns.
Benjamin Netanyahu has been serving as the Prime Minister of Israel since 2009 and he’s currently serving his six terms in office.
His time as Prime Minister has been marked by controversy including allegations of corruption and a divisive approach to politics.
In years his government has faced criticism regarding its handling of the conflict with Hamas in Gaza as well as proposed changes to the judiciary system within the country.
Reasons Behind the Protests
The protests against Netanyahu and his government have stemmed from a range of issues including;
Handling of the conflict with Hamas:
Many Israelis expressed dissatisfaction with how their government responded to the conflict with Hamas on October 7th, 2023. They believed that more should have been done to protect citizens and secure the release of hostages held in Gaza.
Netanyahu has faced corruption allegations for years now. In November 2023 he was indicted on charges related to bribery, fraud and breach of trust. As a result of these allegations many Israelis are calling for his resignation.
The government led by Netanyahu has put forward some alterations to the judiciary system of the country which a significant number of Israelis believe could potentially weaken the autonomy and integrity of the judiciary.
These proposed modifications have faced resistance and have become a central point of concern during the ongoing protests.
Events of the Protests
The protests have taken forms such as demonstrations, rallies, and direct actions. Some notable events include;
- Demonstrations were held in Tel Aviv Habima Square and Caesarea where protesters displayed signs waved flags and chanted slogans demanding Netanyahu’s removal from office.
- Protests were held in Tel Aviv, Israel’s hub where thousands of individuals including relatives and friends of captives chanted “Bring them now”.
- Protests outside Netanyahu’s residence where police restrained protesters who waved blue and white Israeli flags while chanting “Jail now!”.
The protests have had an impact on society as public anger has grown towards how the government has handled these various issues mentioned above.
The protests have also caused a change in their objective as protesters are now channeling their efforts into supporting soldiers and the families of those who were kidnapped or killed.
This shift in focus indicates a change in perspective towards the Netanyahu government with protesters prioritizing the well-being of the people affected by the events that occurred on October 7th.
