On October 14 2023 a tragic incident occurred in Illinois where a 6-year-old American boy named Wadea Al Fayoume lost his life due, to what’s believed to be a hate crime. Alongside him, his mother Hanaan Shahin was also stabbed but is now on the path to recovery.
This heartbreaking attack has ignited outrage and a strong call for an end to violence fueled by hate particularly targeting Muslim, Palestinian communities residing in the United States.
The incident took place while the boy and his mother were living in a house rented from their neighbor and landlord Joseph Czuba, who’s 71 years old.
According to prosecutor’s allegations it is believed that Czuba wanted the mother and son to vacate their residence due to concerns for their safety.
He reportedly feared that the woman he ended up stabbing “was going to call over her Palestinian friends or family to harm them.” As a result of these accusations, Czuba has been indicted on charges related to murder attempted murder, and hate crimes.
In response to this incident members of the American community, in Chicago have come together in mourning over young Wadea’s untimely demise. Family and friends gathered at a restaurant where they fondly remembered him as a child full of energy and charisma.
A funeral service was held for the boy while his recovering mother urged everyone to pray for peace during these challenging times.
